Mustang’s 32nd Annual Western Days & Open Rodeo

September 5th & 6th 2008

Mustang Western Days is an annual tradition that is a community wide event which focuses on family, affordable fun.  It is coordinated between the Mustang Chamber and local businesses, Civic Groups, Clubs and the City of Mustang.  It begins when the Carnival comes to town on the Wednesday before the weekend of fun.  The Carnival is hosted by the Kiwanis Club and is set up in the shopping center parking lot at S. Hwy 152 & Mustang Road. The carnival runs from Wednesday through Saturday night.

On Friday Businesses contribute to the atmosphere by competing in store decorating contests and a chili cook off which has become a spirited competition as local businesses compete for the showmanship award and the best tasting chili.  At the chili cook off contest, there are also awards given in age categories for the best-dressed cowboys & cowgirls.  While the chili cook off competition is taking place, entertainment will take place on the stage at S. Hwy 152 and Mustang Road.

Both Friday and Saturday night the Mustang Round Up Club hosts an Open Rodeo

At the Mustang Round Up Club Arena at 8pm.  Rodeo action is guaranteed to provide a lot of excitement and the competition is always strong .

Saturday morning begins the official full day of fun with the Kiwanis providing the community with the fuel to begin this action charged day with their Pancake breakfast which is held at Mustang Methodist church.  Years of practice make them the best at pancake making.  Following breakfast, the runners in this community meet at the High School Track and compete in the Western Stampede Run.  Divisions are divided according to age groups and there is a place for both young and mature runners to participate.

The Mustang Car Club hosts the Mustang Car Show and accepts registrations on Saturday morning for both open and Mustang Cars, with Trophies and special Trophies awarded on Saturday afternoon.  Last year close to 200 cars participated.

The main event for the morning is the Western Days Parade.  Once a year, two miles of S. Hwy. 152 is shut down for this parade.  Parade participants vary from local dignitaries, clubs, schools and businesses. Every one is decked out and the floats are creative and colorful, all competing for one of the many trophies awarded in different categories.  Last year there were over 150 entries.

Following the parade, the day is filled with entertainment provided by local talent, and a pet show. There’s a variety of delicious food provided by the food vendors and creative decorations and collectibles available for purchase from the arts  & crafts booths.

The Western Days Committee welcomes anyone with a civic, volunteer spirit to assist with planning to ensure each event goes off without a glitch. Contact the chamber Office and find out which committee suits your interests best.
